The Boston Area Homeschoolers’ Queer-Straight Alliance was founded in 2011 by a group of like-minded homeschooling teens from the Boston area, many of whom are now in college. Since then, we have continued our mission of being a safe, confidential space where teens can come together to:
-Support each other;
-Fight for social justice;
-Educate one another and the community;
-and plan social and educational events.
Among the actions and events the QSA has taken and held during the past five years are: two GLSEN conference workshops (But We’re All Allies: Why Every Community Needs a GSA and When They Jump to Conclusions: Education and Conversation on LGBTQ+ Topics with Your Parents and Peers); a bake sale in the year of its founding, which caused the exposure (and remediation) of latent homophobia in the homeschooling community; action for gender-neutral restrooms at the Robbins Library, and Kickstand Café, and Whole Foods Market in Arlington; a letter to President Obama in support of Native political prisoner Leonard Peltier; 3 LGBTQ+ prom events; actions in support of Brianna Wu, #EarthtoParis, and Earth Guardians; and an LGBTQA Youth Summit connecting and networking with various eastern Massachusetts GSAs.
